We're All Ears Inspiration Blog Hop



I found out about this challenge last weekend and thought about my design all week. I really needed some inspiration and a deadline because I haven't been making much jewelry the last few months year. 


For my pair of earrings, I was inspired by the colors from the dragonflies in the challenge picture. The dangling columns are also reminiscent of segments on the dragonflies.

Weekly Links


  1. Printing out this "goal achieving" planner, courtesy of Love Gem Studio, is on my to do list this week. 
  2. I did an internal squeal when I saw that Neil Gaiman posted a video of himself reading Green Eggs and Ham.
  3. Leslie Knope's Galentine's Day is coming up. How do you plan to show your ladyfriends some appreciation? Here are two ideas - tapas and sangrias or a tea party. 
  4. This YouTube video shows a boy crying over a sad song and a dad asking for a thumbs up that his son is okay with finishing the sad song. It's amazing that the music moves such a young, green soul to tears.
  5. Some of this pesto gouda from Trader Joe's is sitting my fridge right now. We've just been eating chucks of it but here are two recipes from TJ's - stuffed pretzels and corned beef pizza.
  6. My husband and I just found Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee and so far we've watched the episodes with Louis CK, Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais, and Chris Rock.

Thrift Store Blog Hop Reveal


Reclaiming used jewelry is my favorite way to get supplies so Sarah's blog hop sounded like a great challenge. Although I already have lots of stuff in my stash purchased for about $1, any reason to hunt for unique supplies is relevant to my interests.


Last weekend, my friend and I went to a few shops and booths during a neighborhood festival. She notice some bags of costume jewelry for $2 each and asked if they were something I could use.


I almost said no because I don't normally use vintage plastic beads. However, after a closer look, I snagged one of the bags with interesting patterned beads and closure bars.


I took apart the pink necklace to get to the knot patterned ones (not in this picture because I suck at remembering to take in progress pictures). 


The first two patterned beads went into a pair of earrings with more pink beads from this necklace and cream colored ruffle beads from another necklace. My original idea was to use the knotted beads with reclaimed marbled glass beads but my muse wanted to use the gray with the more fuchsia colored pink. I reused bead caps from the necklace and both pairs of earrings use this headpin tutorial that I have pinned on my jewelry board. However, my favorite pair use pink swirly beads and bead caps from the challenge necklace with blue-green reclaimed metal. All three pairs still need earring wires as I don't have any in a tone that will mix with aged copper.


The blue semi-triangles above started as a metal seashell like this purple one. These seashells came on from the same thrifted necklace as the chain I sent in Linda's soup mix. At $7, it was a splurge for me, but I couldn't pass it up as a reason to finally buy some tin snips for re-purposing metal.


Another pair of earrings still in progress use more of the blue seashell. The gold beads came from the pink challenge necklace. I love the way the gold paint has worn on these beads.


Some other earrings in progress include a teardrop hoop of seed beads and reclaimed gear spacers from the necklace with cream colored ruffle beads (another awesome $1 deal my friend found). Another pair uses two more knot patterned beads from the challenge necklace with tin bits from a bead exchange (I think its an Arizona tea can). The pink and robin's egg blue went nicely together.


These clip-on earrings were $1 each. Both pairs will get post backs. 





Finally, I got punched pennies. I may have to buy some enamel powder to try on them because how cool would that be?! It was an awesome two days and I got more supplies to reclaim which I will share pictures of later. Bonus, on top of all the jewelry to reconstruct, my friend found my new favorite shirt for just $1.

Nerd P.S. - tl;dr - Take friends thrifting with you who know your skills at re-purposing because they will see things you didn't know you could use. And also find your new favorite shirt.

Bead Soup Reveal


My partner for the 6th Bead Soup Blog Party was Linda of Must-Haves Jewelry. 
The pieces she created from my bead soup ingredients are amazing. 


Here's the soup she sent me. 

I used the special closure and blue rounds Linda sent with 
reclaimed wood, rose quartz and green stone beads.

I used the blue coral beads with a wooden bird pendant,
 its matching beads, and a clay leaf .

The blue pearls Linda sent looked great with these yellow beads 
I had just picked up.

Finally, I used two of the lampwork beads with reclaimed metal tags.
I kept the earrings pretty simple to accentuate the beads themselves.

Shipwreck Dandy Giveaway


Richelle of Shipwreck Dandy is having a giveaway on her blog and, like I always do, I've procrastinated about entering. I found her, her blog, and her amazing jewelry through fancifuldevice's forum. I would love to win some of her polymer beads as her techniques, like these faceted ones, make the beads look like they aren't polymer clay at all.


She recently added these adorable piglets to her etsy store and I may have to get them for myself as a reward for finishing my senior thesis paper this weekend. Hopefully, they are still around. :)

This odd-looking tool is my new best friend.
It lets me punch holes in metal and I've been trying it on everything since I got it yesterday.
I thrifted this big earring which reminded me of Monet's paintings. I took it apart right away for all of its lovely, little pieces.
Four of the five beads will be in this necklace and one of the discs. The purple, green, and copper looks awesome together. The copper teardrop pendant only had one hole yesterday, but my new friend said hello.
The big disc from the earring went perfectly with this wooden toggle button. Now I just need to add dangly stuff.

"Fly Home" is my favorite pair of earrings from today. They use pieces from
the Monet earring and labradite chips. The bird and house charms are so cute.

Another of the discs went into this work in progress.
Here are four pairs of earrings that are laid out on my table.

Art Bead Scene's Muffin Tin Challenge

I had a lot of fun working filling up my muffin tin with projects and being able to just grab one to work on. The ten cups I finished turned into eleven necklaces. My favorites ended up being the two necklaces with different shaped Amazonite and fossil coin beads. While looking for a closure, I found a necklace of metal connectors that looked just like waves and had to use them with the sea foam blues of the Amazonite.

Taking pictures is so hard without sunlight. Better pictures and all eleven necklaces tomorrow.
